In honor of tomorrow’s New Moon in Gemini, I’ve decided to get creative with my intentions. Drawing on Gemini’s affinity for messages that travel through the air, I will be putting together my own New Moon Mixtape. Think of it as a sort of mood board made of audio or a collage of sound. The premise is pretty simple, you tune into the universe by tuning into your radio. Find a song you like and tape it. Follow that up with another, and another until you have a soundtrack for the month. Now, you have theme music to play back whenever you need to focus on your intentions. It’s Mixtape Magic.
For those of you too young to remember mixtapes, they were all the rage in the 80’s. Everybody at your high school pirated songs off the radio, or in the late 80’s taped some CD tracks, to create their own custom “soundtracks”. Friends made friends mixtapes. Boyfriends made girlfriends mixtapes. Fathers made daughters mixtapes. It was a thing.
But no one ever really talks about how magical they were. Mixtapes have the power to transport you to a feeling, moment or mood like nothing else out there. And if you can capture the mood of your intentions then your work with them will be all the better.
Now, I know what you’re thinking. Can’t I just do this on Spotify? Well you certainly could put together a Spotify list of songs to fit your intention. That’s valid. But it’s just not the same. When you put together a mix tape you are tapping into your local radio waves and capturing moods and messages coming in from over the airwaves. And that’s magic.

While the instructions are pretty simple, the trick is in the equipment. You can find a AM/FM cassette recorder on Amazon, for about $35. For my project, I got this one. Maxell cassettes are also available on Amazon. They come in 60 and 90 minute increments, which gives you 30 or 45 minutes per side. It’s up to you how long you want to make the tape. If you go walking for 45 minutes a few times a week, the 90 minutes may work better. If you just want a quick shot of inspiration, the 30 minutes may be just what you’re looking for.
There are cheaper cassette tapes out there. But I don’t recommend them. Cheap tapes can often get chewed up by the recorder and you don’t want that to happen.
