Concentrate all your thoughts upon the work in hand. The sun’s rays do not burn until brought to a focus.
– Alexander Graham Bell
Gemini season has come to an end, and now we are in the early days of Cancer season. But before we dive into the emotional depths, I thought we would wrap up the month with a little Gemini energy. So, I looked for a quote on multitasking only to find that they were not so inspirational. In fact, they were just the opposite. All the quotes I saw said that you should concentrate on one thing at a time, and to do more is to do them all poorly. An interesting transition away from the flirting with the butterfly energy of Gemini.
So, is multitasking a myth? In today’s day and age, multitasking is considered a must. You’ve got a job where the phone is ringing, a report is due, the FedEx guy just arrived, and you have 25 email messages to respond to. So, you multitask, right? Or do you really? It brings to mind the old saying, “How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.”
The downside of multitasking
This Gemini season, my head was absolutely buzzing with ideas. I wrote a list of blog topics, took online astrology and coaching classes, started a meetup, wrote posts daily, and jumped from book to book reading everything I could about every subject under the sun. It was a lot. And I’m not sure where it got me. While I was seemingly productive, I found that I was also making a lot of mistakes. I wrote down Gemini when I meant Mercury. I wrote down trine when I meant square. I wrote down Mead Moon when I meant Strawberry. It was very unlike my normally precise and perfectionist self. And what do I attribute it to? Multi-tasking.
When you flit from one subject to the next, it’s easy to make mistakes. Without focus, you just don’t get the depth to penetrate a subject to the point where it permeates your mind, body, and soul. And without that visceral learning, it’s basically in one ear and out the other. At least for me anyway. So, what good was Gemini season?
Goodbye idea season
Gemini season was still good because it planted the seeds of a thousand ideas. Kind of like the brainstorming phase of a project, it was wonderful for throwing crap at the wall and seeing what sticks. But to get it to stick, you really got to work with it and focus. So, what are you focusing on this summer? Is it time to relax and kick back or are you up for learning a new skill or hobby? For me, I don’t know yet. I need to go back through all those little bits and scraps of ideas I started and see which ones are worth pursuing. And now that Mars is in Taurus it’s a great time to consider what’s next and clarify your long-term plans.
But as we say goodbye to June, I am a little sentimental. While I’m not a fan of making mistakes and having my head feel like it’s about to explode with a thousand bustling ideas, it was electric and exciting. But now it’s time to settle into my feelings, about what paths feel good to follow, and which ones to save for the future.
